The rapid development of cardiology draws attention to both therapeutic methods and diagnostic tools. The correctness and timeliness of management depends on the latter. Aim: to investigate the stages cardiac diagnostics modern principles development. Results. This review investigates the key stages of cardiological diagnostic techniques development. Three historical periods were identified. The first period (from prehistoric times to the 17th century) is characterized by a lack of correct knowledge about the functioning of the cardiovascular system and thus diagnostic was non-systematic. The first period ended up with the discovery of blood circulation circles. In the second period (17th century–mid-20th century) physical methods of diagnosis flourished utilizing modern understanding hemodynamics basis. The third period (mid 20th century–the present) is characterized by the development of technical devices, namely computer tomography, echocardiography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Three visualization techniques have made their way to significantly improve the quality and informativeness of images. Due to these technologies, for the first time in the history of mankind, the heart is visualized in a three- and four-dimensional functioning state. Conclusion. Cardiology diagnostics has undergone a step-by-step evolution from occasional observations to high-resolution imaging technologies. The growing capabilities and availability of appropriate devices require from cardiologists to have the skills to conduct these examinations and interpret the obtained data.
