Removal of implants after osteosynthesis: «pros» and «cons»

The study analyzed the feasibility of removing metal implants after osteosynthesis of fractures of long bones of the limbs. A survey was conducted of 198 patients, who underwent implant removal operations. The effectiveness assessment was based on a questionnaire, radiography, сomputed tomography and ultrasound. 52% of patients noted a decrease in pain and improved limb function after surgery. In 68% of cases, the reason for the surgery was a doctor’s recommendation, in 21% — pain and in 11% — impaired function. Symptomatic patients showed higher satisfaction with the results of the operation (96% pain reduction) than asymptomatic patients. Absolute and relative indications for implant removal were formulated. It was concluded that the removal of metal fixators should not be considered a routine procedure and should be performed taking into account clear indications and the patient’s wishes.
