The development and formation of scientific ideas about motivation in patients with schizophrenia is one of the most complex and significant theoretical and practical problems of modern psychiatry and medical psychology.

The purpose of the study: to determine the features of the motivational sphere in patients with schizophrenia in order to improve the diagnosis and psycho-correction of patients with negative symptoms in schizophrenia.

Object and research methods. The study of the motivational sphere in patients with negative symptoms in schizophrenia included the analysis of the state of apathy in patients and the assessment of the motivational profile of the individual. A complex of research methods was used: psychometric (apathy rating scale (AES-С)), psycho-diagnostic (method of studying the motivational sphere of the personality (V.E. Milman, 1990)) and statistical. 252 patients with negative symptoms of schizophrenia (main group) and 79 patients with positive symptoms of schizophrenia (comparison group) were examined.

Results. As a result of the study, the following features of the motivational sphere, characteristic of patients with negative symptoms in schizophrenia, were established: a high general level of apathy, pronounced violations of emotional motivational components, pronounced violations of goal-directed behavior, violations of cognitive components of motivation, flattening of general life and work motivational profiles.
