Research on the impact of the overweight and obesity on the activity and life activities of the National Police and military personnel of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine

The aim of this study is to examine the impact of overweight and obesity on the activity and quality of life of employees of the National Police of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine. Materials and methods. The study was conducted using a sociological survey based on a specially designed questionnaire (460 respondents, with a preliminary pilot study of 50 respondents) among police officers and military personnel of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine whose body mass index (BMI) exceeded 25.0 kg/m2. Research methods included medical-statistical and content analysis, as well as sociological research. Results. Given the average age of the respondents (39.0±1.2 years), the impact of excess weight on the respondents’ social and sexual lives and daily routines was found to be insignificant. Approximately 10.0% of respondents, based on various characteristics, acknowledged the presence of minor limitations associated with excess weight. At the same time, the majority (85.87±1.62%) had not consulted medical personnel regarding questions or problems related to the onset of excess weight and were not concerned about a possible negative attitude from family and acquaintances (92.83±1.20%), as well as their social circle (91.3±1.31%) regarding the onset or progression of overweight and obesity. Conclusions. The above demonstrates that the asymptomatic nature of early signs of overweight (BMI 25.0–29.9 kg/m2) and obesity (BMI ≥30.0 kg/m2), coupled with patients’ own sense of safety regarding this issue, results in a lack of perceived need for medical consultation. It is precisely these identified characteristics that highlight the importance of conducting preventive diagnostic examinations, with the recommendation (where necessary) of lifestyle and dietary modifications to prevent the progression of signs of overweight and/or obesity among the selected group of police officers and military personnel of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine. A comprehensive approach to the consultative and diagnostic support of individuals with overweight and obesity could prove effective, taking into account their individual characteristics and workplace conditions, particularly regarding their ability to implement the proposed preventive measures. It is crucial to identify effective strategies for medical, organizational, and communication support for patients who have expressed a desire to implement effective preventive strategies to avoid the onset of overweight and obesity.
