Leptospirosis: aspects of nervous system injury | Ukrainian Medical Journal

Leptospirosis is one of the most significant zoonosis of worldwide distribution. The highest incidence is in countries with tropical climate. Leptospirosis is not sufficiently recognized due to the diversity of its clinical symptoms. Its most frequent manifestations are impaired kidney function, jaundice and myalgia. However, there are also neurological lesions: aseptic meningitis, multiple mononeuropathy, myeloradiculopathy, myelopathy, Guillain — Barré syndrome, meningoencephalitis, intracerebral hemorrhage, cerebellar dysfunction, iridocyclitis, posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome. Neurological manifestations are rarely observed and often remain unrecognized. Therefore, it is necessary to remember these complications to ensure early diagnosis and successful treatment of this disease.
