The results of foreign research about the molecular and genetic mechanism of Crohn’s disease and recent trends in diagnostic visualization techniques for inflammatory bowel disease in clinic has been summarized in the article. Autophagy plays a prominent role in innate immune response towards intracellular pathogens. Discovery of authophagy genes ATC16L1 and IRGM as risk factors for Crohn’s disease, positioning autophagy as a key converging mechanism in inflammatory bowel disease. Visualized assessment methods (standard endoscopic procedure, colonoscopy, high-magnification chromocolonoscopy, confocal laser endomicroscopy, capsule endoscopy, balloon-assisted enteroscopy, magnetic enterography) enable assessment of proinflammatory activity in the small/large intestine (mucosal, submucosal) and transmurale inflammation without the need for biopsy specimen from patients with chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
