Cardiovascular diseases retain their importance as one of the most important causes of premature mortality and mortality in general population and among patients with established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. The review is devoted to the discussion of the statins’ efficacy as one of the most effective programs for prevention cardiovascular morbidity, mortality and disability in general population and in patients with established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Various programs of statin use in patients of different cardiovascular risk are discussed. The recommendations of the most authoritative medical associations concerning the optimal choice of statins in various clinical situations in the programs of primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases are given. The advantages of atorvastatin as the most commonly prescribed drug are considered in order to modify the cardiovascular risk and to increase the probability of survival in patients of vulnerable populations.
