Reperfusion syndrome (RS) is accompanied by a dysfunction of the liver microvascular vessels and by oxidative stress, leading to necrosis and apoptosis of the liver cells. The development of RS in liver is a multi-step and multi-factorial process. Toxic substances play an important role in its pathogenesis, while they’re entering the systemic blood circulation and contribute to general intoxication. Restoration of blood flow does not resolve these changes; on the contrary, the situation is aggravated by the damaging action of free radicals and cytokines entering the liver during reperfusion. Knowledge of the mechanisms of pathophysiological processes accompanying RS may contribute to the development of new science-based techniques for improving the quality of transplantation and other extensive operations on the liver and reduce the risk of postoperative complications.
