Resume

This review compares common myths about mucoactive therapy for cough in children with clinical guidelines and findings from studies of the standardized ivy leaf extract EA 575®. It discusses the protective role of mucus, mechanisms of mucus clearance, and principles guiding the appropriate use of mucolytics. Experimental and clinical data on the pharmacological properties, efficacy, and tolerability of EA 575® are summarized, including comparisons with placebo, synthetic agents, and herbal combination products. The review emphasizes the need to consider study design, patient age, and the limitations of extrapolating findings to other ivy preparations. Available evidence supports considering EA 575® as an option for symptomatic mucoactive therapy when clinically indicated and with due regard to age restrictions.
