Professor M.M. Popov: The Origins of the Odesa School of Neurology and the Development of National University Medical Education

During the Soviet period, the scientific and educational activities of Professor Mykola M. Popov were addressed only fragmentarily. Following his emigration to Bulgaria, his name virtually disappeared from Soviet historical and medical literature, which significantly hindered an objective assessment of his contribution to the development of neurology and university medical education. Based on published sources, archival documents, and historical-medical analysis, this article examines the principal stages of the scientific, educational, and organizational activities of Professor Mykola M. Popov, one of the leading representatives of neurology and psychiatry in the late nineteenth and first third of the twentieth century. The study traces his professional development at the Imperial Medical-Surgical Academy and his academic career at the Universities of Warsaw, Kazan, and Novorossiysk, while demonstrating the continuity of scientific traditions shaped by the leading European and national neurological schools. Particular attention is paid to Popov’s activities in Odesa, where he organized the Department and Clinic of Nervous and Mental Diseases, established a modern research and clinical infrastructure, laid the foundations of the Odesa School of Neurology, and made a substantial contribution to the development of university medical education, including the establishment of the Odesa Higher Women’s Medical Courses. The article analyzes the principal directions of Professor Popov’s research, encompassing neuromorphology, clinical neurology, topical diagnosis, pathology of the central nervous system pathways, and psychiatry. Professor Popov trained a distinguished generation of disciples, many of whom subsequently became professors, heads of university departments, and founders of neurological and psychiatric schools at major academic centers of the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union, and Bulgaria. Professor Popov’s scientific, educational, and organizational activities played a significant role in the establishment of academic neurology, the development of university medical education, and the continuity of neurological research traditions, thereby exerting a lasting influence on the subsequent development of neurology in Central and Eastern Europe.
